Uganda Manufacturers have asked government to hand over the entire Uganda Prison Service land in Luzira to industrial production.
According to Uganda Manufactures Association, chairman, Mr. Amos Nzai, the move will reduce on their cost of doing business by being near the source of water.
“Honorable Prime Minister (Ruhakana Rugunda, we do request for Luzira land for our manufacturing use. The land is near the lake (Victoria) and this makes it reduce the costs by using free water. I have ever brought this issue to you but I am re-echoing for the record,” Nzai said.
Speaking at the opening of the UMA trade show officiated by Rugunda on Tuesday, Nzai argued by government giving them the land, locally manufactured product will be competitive in pricing.
Rugunda, who represented President Yoweri Museveni did not respond to the manufactures’ request. In his speech read by Rugunda, President Museveni advised manufactures to increase on their production to tarp in the African regional markets.
Rugunda earlier toured various stalls and crowned the event with handing trophies to outstanding stalls.
Luzira is a suburb of Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It is best known for the country’s main prison, Luzira Maximum Security Prison, which has seen significant redevelopment thanks to the work of African Prisons Project, a charity based in the UK and Kampala. Recently part of the land has already been given to investors. Nzai however did not propose where the prison should be relocated.
